Beschrijving

Elvis Valderez (Gael Garcia Bernal) is een 21 jarige dromer die, net eervol ontslagen bij de Amerikaanse marine, op zoek gaat naar zijn vader in zijn geboortestad Corpus Christi, Texas. Zijn vader David Sandow, een man van wie hij alleen gehoord heeft van zijn inmiddels overleden Mexicaanse moeder, blijkt pastoor bij een bloeiende doopsgezinde kerk. Wanneer Elvis, Malerie (Pell James) de dochter van David, ontmoet is hij op slag verkocht. Wanneer hij zijn vader volgt tot zijn huis verteld deze Elvis dat hij niets met hem te maken wil hebben en geeft dit ook duidelijk aan zijn ‘perfecte’ gezin door. Malerie ziet in de stiekeme ontmoetingen met Elvis echter de kans om te vluchten uit het dagelijkse strenge leven. De verhouding ontwikkeld zich snel tot een romance waarbij de natuurlijke taboos snel worden overschreden. De bemoeienis van Maleries broer Paul (Paul Dano) zijn uiteindelijk de inleiding tot een bijna bijbelse tragedie.
