Beschrijving

Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) is een weeskind dat nooit geadopteerd zal worden. Het weeshuis waar hij opgroeide doet dienst als illegale abortuskliniek en arts Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine) ontfermt zich over Homer. Hij ziet in de jongen de ideale opvolger en leert hem alleswat hij weet. Wanneer Homer een kans aangrijpt om het kleine universum van het weeshuis te verlaten, heeftDr. Larch het daar erg moeilijk mee. In brieven probeert hij Homer over te halen om terug te komen, maar deze heeft het prima naar zijn zin op de boerderij waar hij is gaan werken als appelplukker. Helemaal wanneer hij verliefd wordt op de jonge Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron). Homers gebrek aan levenservaring betekent dat hij in alles zijn hart volgt zonder voor een meer rationele benadering te kiezen. Dat gaat een tijd goed, maar uiteindelijk komt Homer in aanraking met de minder leuke kanten van het bestaan. Hij wordt gedwongen keuzes te maken waarbij hij niet meer alleen kan afgaan op zijn emoties.
