Heil of onheil, Charles Chaplin werpt zichzelf in de strijd! Het resultaat is een gelauwerde klassieker die sinds 2000 in de Top-100 American Comedies van het American Film Institute prijkt. De V.S. waren zelfs nog niet betrokken bij de Tweede Wereldoorlog, toen Chaplin zijn grappen en grollen al op Der Führer begon af te vuren. In deze film vertolkt hij een dubbelrol: de Hitleriaanse Adenoid Hynkel en een Joodse kapper die als twee druppels water op -der Nutsie- gelijkt. Chaplin gebruikt woordspelingen, visuele grappen en slapstick om het fascisme een neus te zetten, maar hij wisselt die humor wel af met prangende scènes van een getto dat siddert onder de terreur van nietsontziende stoottroepen. Onsterfelijke scènes zijn onder meer Hynkels zelfingenomen dansje met een wereldbol, de ‘ondersteboven-vlucht’ en het maniakale kappersstoelduel tussen Hynkel en zijn Mussolini-achtige rivaal (Jack Oakie). In The Great Dictator gaan klassieke humor en grootse filmpassie hand in hand.
