Voor zijn tweede film in zijn ‘Trilogy of Life’ zocht Pasolini inspiratie bij de Canterbury Tales van de Britse 14e eeuwse auteur Geoffrey Chaucer. ‘In I Racconti Di Canterbury’ vertellen pelgrims op doortocht in Zuid- Engeland, elkaar om beurten verhalen om de tijd te doden. Pasolini vormt de rode draad doorheen de verschillende verhalen in zijn rol als commentator, net zoals Chaucer in zijn boek.
