Deze nauwkeurig samengestelde docufilm analyseert met een scherp, analytische geest het “Dritten Reiches” van Adolf Hitler. De film werd in 1977 gemaakt om de Hitler biografie van auteur/regisseur Joachim Fest visueel te ondersteunen en toont Hitlers onwaarschijnlijke opgang van lokaal schorem/ opruier tot Duitslands meest charismatische en destructieve staatshoofd ooit.

Fest peilt naar de motieven van de Messiasachtige Führer en illustreert aan de hand van een nooit eerder geziene reeks van filmbronnen Hitlers niet-aflatende talent voor mediamanipulatie, massapsychologie en uitbuiting van andermans zwakheden. Bijzonder waardevol is Fests weergave van de beslissende jaren 1932 en 1933 waarin Hitler zichzelf dankzij de economische crisis, het gefrustreerde Duitse nationalisme en de wanhoop van Duitslands conservatieve elite, zich een weg blufte in het politiek ambt om dan met meedogenloze efficiëntie de absolute macht te grijpen.
