John Halder (Viggo Mortensen) heeft een goede baan als hoogleraar, maar kampt met problemen aan het thuisfront. Zijn neurotische vrouw, zijn twee veeleisende kinderen en zijn dementerende moeder vormen daar de oorzaak van. Dan besluit Halder een boek te schrijven om zijn frustraties kwijt te raken.
