Beschrijving

New York, 1840. Amsterdam Vallon ziet als klein jongetje hoe zijn vader, een Ierse immigrantenleider, wordt afgeslacht door bendeleider Bill the Butcher tijdens gevechten tussen Ierse immigranten en Amerikanen die in New York zijn geboren. Eenmaal volwassen keert Amsterdam terug naar zijn oude buurt. The Butcher zwaait er nog steeds de scepter en wil de Ierse immigranten (die met tienduizenden per week aankomen) met geweld te verdrijven.

Amsterdam wil wraak nemen op Bill maar moet daarvoor eerst zijn vertrouwen winnen. Als Amsterdams plan vreselijk misgaat verzamelt hij een leger Ieren dat groot genoeg is om de bende van Bill te verslaan. De onvermijdelijke confrontatie komt precies op het moment dat alle immigranten met geweld in opstand komen tegen de dienstplicht. New York verandert in een gigantisch slagveld.
