Valt Iwo Jima dan valt Japan! Iwo Jima, het Normandie van Azi?. De Normandi? invasie was gruwelijk, onmenselijk en beestachtig zwaar. Iwo Jima nog erger, woorden om deze hel te beschrijven zijn er niet. 21.000 Japanners, ijzersterk verschanist in een ondergronds netwerk van tunnels, bunkers en honderden gecamoufleerde schietposten wachten af. Een dagenlang bombarement vanaf zee brengt de Japanse legermacht nagenoeg geen schade. Tijdens de landing op het strand en de eerste dagen op het eiland wordt geen Japanner gezien. Wel worden de Amerikanen massaal afgeslacht! Sterven voor de keizer wordt gezien als de hoogste eer in Japan. Op overgave hoeven de Amerikanen dus niet te rekenen. Slechts 214 Japanners overleven de slag! Maar niemand heeft Iwo Jima toen verlaten zoals hij er ooit aankwam.
