Recorded in Amsterdam’s historic, 17th Century, Portuguese synagogue, Cantors: A Faith In Song brought together three of the world’s most revered Cantors in a rare and joyous concert of Jewish religious and secular music. The Portuguese Synagogue is an iconic sanctuary in Jewish history and the audience was aware that they were participating in a once-in-a-lifetime meeting of musicals minds… and hearts.
Some of the Cantor’s music recalled a time when the Cantor assumed mythic, heroic, and legendary folk proportions as the true messenger of God. Other, more recent songs captured the humor and great spirit of traditional Yiddish folk and theatrical singing. Set to soaring new orchestral scores, the music lifted the familiar repertoire to new emotional heights.
Cantor Alberto Mizrahi of the Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago, Cantor Naftali Herstik, Chief Cantor of Jerusalem’s Great Synague, and Cantor Benzion Miller of Young Israel Beth-El, Borough Park, Brooklyn, performed with the Netherlands Theater Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jules van Hessen and with London’s premier Jewish male choir, th Ne’imah Singers.
